GAME plans for students

This fall, the staff in our building was given a list of technology skills that would help us be effective and efficient. All staff was to go through the list and decide where we feel competent, proficient, or not in my bag of tricks. The list included everything from opening a Word file to creating and maintaining our own website. The list was a survey to be used to create our technology goal of the year, a staff development requirement.

In this master's program, we were asked to find another area of technology standards to create a goal and GAME plan to work on throughout the course. The plan that we have reflected back on in the last two months. Checking back and checking progress,as well as making adjustments along the way.

Bringing the skill of the making goals and reflecting back on them into the classroom, is a new goal to add to my list. As we have started a new trimester this week at school, it seemed like a perfect time to make new goals. I had my students make four spots on a piece of paper, creating spots for two academic goals, a behavior goal, and an open goal to be used for any area including technology. The final goal is the important one in this case. The students had to think about what we are doing in our technology class and where they would like to improve their skills. For example, several students have goals to improve their creativity in the projects that we are making, to go above and beyond the typical files. Some students added keyboarding skills to their goal.

In the next few months, we will look back on the plans that we have made to meet our goal and check to see if our goals are reasonable and reachable. Some adjustments will need to be made, but with monitoring we should be able to keep on the track of the original goals. So off we head in the direction of growing and learning!

  1. Wow what a great idea. I think that is great that you have already started taking initative in getting your students to set goals and work towards achieving those goals. I think goal setting is important in all aspects of life and among all ages. What a great plan and hopefully your students will take it seriously and reach their goals. Again god job on the blog, I enjoyed reading it.

  2. I really like your plan for having students come up with two academic goals, a behavior goal and a technology goal for themselves. When students set goals and take responsibilty for their own learning, they are on their way. As I read your post, I got the idea of giving my students a list of basic technology skills and having them rate their greatest strengths and weaknesses. From there, they can create a technology goal and start their own GAME plan. It would be a good starting point when introducing them to the NETS-S performance indicators.

  3. Great job having your students set their own goals. I tried this at the beginning of this year for the first time. I had them select a personal art goal. They wrote it on the inside of their portfolio folder and every quarter when we meet about adding new artifacts to their portfolio, we always revisit their goal and discuss the progress they have made. It has really given many of them something to work hard towards. I like your idea of adding a technology goal into the mix. I believe I will incorporate that in the beginning of next year after we integrate more technology into our classwork. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep up the great work!

  4. Thank you all for your support, my students really seem to be responding to our goals and taking them seriously. We will see how that continues : ) I added the technology goal this year, as our technology class was replaced by Spanish. The teachers are now responsible for the technology skills with our class. It has helped me plan for what my students need to work on.

Great idea about having your students set a behavior goal, and another goal that includes technology. Your students will benefit greatly from this plan. This will help them become self-directed in their learning.
